Somatic Education is a system that uses movement and awareness to re-educate and re-awaken your conscious control of your muscles. Somatic Education is a tool that melts away muscle tension, improves posture, and increases flexibility and efficient movement. The word 'soma' means 'living body'. The term 'somatic' refers to the unavoidable connection of your mind, body, emotions and spirit. Your 'somatic experience' is how you sense your body from within.
Somatic Education focuses your attention on the internal sensations of movement. You can't relax muscles that are unconsciously tense if you cannot feel the contraction. As you contract a muscle and then control the lengthening, the cortex of your brain is activated. This gives you the ability to consciously relax that muscle.
Somatic movements are gentle and pain free. Remember: if you want to untie a knot, you must look at the cord carefully, then gently undo the tangle. Yanking on the cord will only make the knot tighter.
Somatic Education can be done one on one with a therapist, or in a group class setting, practicing simple movement patterns.
Hody Lye, RMT practices Somatic techniques and leads Somatic Movement Classes in Pitt Meadows, a short drive from Langley and Maple Ridge.
