CranioSacral Therapy
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a manual therapy borne from the field of cranial osteopathy, which was developed
at
the beginning of the 20th century by Dr. William Garner Sutherland. Dr. Sutherland's discovery that human cranial bones move
rhythmically in relation to internal pressures served as the basis of his osteopathic treatments. This cranial rhythm is separate
and distinct from the body's respiratory and cardiac rhythms. By gently applying pressure to the cranial bones, he theorized that
he could therapeutically change cranial bone and fluid movements, thereby relieving a wide range of symptoms.
Osteopath Dr. John Upledger expanded on Dr. Sutherland's work starting in the 1970s and provocatively modernized
the modality for non-osteopathic practitioners. In 1985, Dr. Upledger co-founded the Upledger Institute International where his
CranioSacral Therapy teachings often challenged traditional Western Medicine concepts. He recognized that movement of the fascial
membranes surrounding the brain affects the brain's functioning. Dr. Upledger believed that restrictions impairing the natural
motions of cranial bones and/or membranes can cause physical and mental distress.
CranioSacral therapists use soft touch and gentle pressure to evaluate and manipulate the bones and soft tissues
around the brain and spinal cord (also known as the dural membranes). CranioSacral Therapy is designed to support the normal
functioning of the central nervous system, facilitate the body's natural healing processes, and promote whole-body health. The
benefits of such treatment are wide-reaching. Clients report improved mobility, flexibility, and comfort due to reduced pain,
tension, and stress. CranioSacral Therapy has a cumulative effect on the entire body and can provide relief not only physically but
also mentally and emotionally.
CranioSacral Therapy is a useful therapy for treating:
I've completed numerous CranioSacral Therapy courses offered by the Upledger Institute over the past decade. Over
that same period of time, I also attended monthly mentor & peer study groups to practise and hone these transformational techniques.
I continue to take CranioSacral Therapy courses and attend monthly study groups. In February 2026, I completed the Upledger Institute's
CranioSacral Therapy for Cranial Nerves course to expand on this training and provide more nuanced care to my clients. This modality
will always be a staple in my daily practice as an RMT.
